Murals for Communites goes to Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture
Co. Galway, Ireland

Waterford City and County Council and The Walls Project are delighted to announce that Murals for Communities in Spiddal and Inisbofin - for Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture - kicked off on October 27th 2020.

For Galway 2020, the initiative sees the co-creation of two original large outdoor mural artworks in Galway County, with two local community groups working with Magdalena Karol, an Irish-based Polish Street Artist and illustrator. Community groups include Aras Chois Fharraige Nursing Home An Spidéal and the Community Services Programme Inisbofin. This is done through the facilitation of thematic workshops with the community, based on local language, landscape and migration.

All the workshops are facilitated remotely, to comply with the current Irish Government restrictions in place, in response to Covid 19.

The Walls Project team and artist Magdalena Karol held a workshop with the group of residents from the charming island of Inisbofin, and in the afternoon they met with the group of residents from the nursing home Áras Chois Fharraige, in Spiddal.

Wonderful ideas were elicited throughout the workshops: lovely insights on the Irish Dance Halls very popular in the '60s, and mythological pearls on the Inisbofin island. Magda has plenty of materials to develop two fantastic sketches that will be presented on Tuesday the 3rd of November. The murals will be painted as soon as restrictions will be lifted.
